From its establishment through 2005, the INNI has distributed nearly $45 million in government funds to Israel's leading academic institutions, primarily to help build state-of-the-art facilities for scientific research at the nanoscale.
Worldwide investment in nanotechnology R&D is estimated at over $4 billion annually and rapidly expanding. Israel's national investment seems small when compared to larger nations, but when viewed as a percentage of gross national product (a standard means of measuring relative investment) the size of Israel's investment outranks most leading industrial nations.
To maintain step with other leading nations, the INNI is developing a highly diversified set of funding sources for coming years, with an aim to augment Israel's limited government funding.
